ChatRank vs Profound (2026): weekly marching orders or an enterprise data set?

ChatRank sells topics, weekly recommendations and an editor from $499/mo. Profound sells prompts from $99/mo and its agent suite on Enterprise. We line up the units, the API story and the buyer fit, with Promptwatch as the benchmark.

ChatRank and Profound cost roughly the same at the mid tier and sell almost opposite things. ChatRank is for a lean team that wants an agent to say what to publish this week and an editor to write it in. Profound is a large marketing-agent platform with a demand dataset, built for teams that can staff it. The buying question is who does the work after the data arrives: your team with weekly prompts from ChatRank, or a dedicated analyst inside a Profound contract.

We use Promptwatch as the benchmark because it publishes the layers both of these leave out. ChatRank details come from chatrank.ai/pricing and chatrank.ai/about, read on 14 October 2026. Profound figures are from its published tiers. Promptwatch plans are from its llms.txt, checked on 15 October 2026.

Mind the units

ChatRank counts topics. Profound and Promptwatch count prompts. A topic can group several prompts, so 20 topics on ChatRank Plus is not directly comparable to 50 prompts on Profound Starter. Compare engines and cadence instead. Those are harder numbers.

In the $399 to $499 band, Profound Growth ($399, annual) gives three engines and 100 prompts. ChatRank Plus ($499, monthly) gives ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews with weekly data. Profound is ahead on coverage. ChatRank is ahead on seats and on what it hands you each Monday.

ChatRank: an agent that assigns homework

ChatRank was founded by Jon Mest and Joe Delgado after Google AI Overviews cut the search traffic of their PR software company, Just Reach Out, in August 2024. Its agent, ReLU, reads the tracking data and returns concrete jobs: blog posts to publish, Reddit threads to join, review sites to improve. Then it asks you questions and drafts the rest. The pitch is one hour a week of input.

Plus allows up to 5 recommendations a week, Pro 15, Power 30. The editor has brand voice, style guides, AI detection and version history. You also get a site audit, llms.txt generation and hosting, and Google Analytics integration. Shopify and WordPress plugins start on Pro.

Where it stops: competitor tracking starts on Pro at $999. Plus data is weekly. Engine coverage beyond ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity is described only as "and more". The Power card says API access while the comparison table says Enterprise only, so get it in writing. Annual plans are paid upfront ($4,990, $9,990, $19,990). The 30% visibility growth quoted for Tip Top K9 is a vendor testimonial.

Profound: depth you have to grow into

On Enterprise, Profound covers up to ten engines. Reports roll up by prompt cluster, showing how your citation share and share of voice stack up against competitor cite-rates. Prompt Volumes, its estimate of real query demand per prompt, is the standout. G2 scores it 4.6/5.

The catch is how much of that sits on Enterprise, from about $40k a year: the ten engines, full Prompt Volumes, the agents, API, SSO and SOC 2. Starter at $99 is ChatGPT with 50 prompts and one seat. Billing on public tiers is annual. Setup realistically takes 1 to 3 months with an owner, and some G2 reviewers report citation counts that disagree with manual checks. Read the homepage and AI search looks like one service line inside a broader marketing-agent pitch.

Where Promptwatch fits

The last row is where Promptwatch earns a place on this shortlist. MCP and API access come with all three paid brand plans, starting at $95/mo. With the REST API v2 and the MCP server you can pull visibility data into your own dashboards or AI agents, which ChatRank and Profound reserve for their upper tiers.

The other gaps are the ones neither vendor publishes. Agent Analytics, from Professional at $245/mo, logs ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot visits and links crawls to citations. Visitor analytics counts AI-referred sessions and conversions through a script or GTM template. Citation analytics breaks out Reddit and YouTube citations, which tells you which threads actually feed answers before you follow a ReLU suggestion to post in one. And Content Agents go past recommendations: they write and publish GEO pages to Webflow or Framer, with a review inbox in between.

Refresh is daily on every paid brand plan. On ChatRank, daily data starts at $1,999.

ChatRank keeps two advantages: unlimited users on its entry plan, and an editor with brand voice and AI detection built in. Promptwatch Essential has one seat.

Verdict

ChatRank wins for small teams that want to be told what to write. Profound wins for large teams that can fund and staff a $40k program. Most buyers sit between those, and for them Promptwatch is the stronger first evaluation: daily data, API access from $95, and crawler logs plus conversion tracking from $245, all at listed prices.

FAQ

Is ChatRank or Profound cheaper?

Profound at entry ($99/mo annual against $499/mo). At the top, ChatRank Power is $1,999/mo while Profound Enterprise starts around $40k a year.

Does ChatRank include an API?

The pricing page contradicts itself: the Power card mentions API access, but the comparison table lists it as Enterprise only. Confirm before buying.

Why look at Promptwatch alongside ChatRank and Profound?

It publishes crawler logs, AI-referred conversions and API access on paid plans, and none of those appear on the entry tiers of either tool.
