AI Search Visibility Monitoring for Agencies: ChatGPT Citations and Brand Monitoring Tools
Agency monitoring tools ranked on the deliverable clients actually act on: the list of pages ChatGPT cited per prompt, what changed, and what it costs per client.
Most agency AI-visibility reports open with a dashboard screenshot: a visibility score, a trend line, a share-of-voice donut. Clients nod at it and then ask the question the dashboard can't answer: "So what do we do?" The answer is almost always in the citations. Which URL did ChatGPT cite when it recommended a competitor? Was it the competitor's own page, a review site, a Reddit thread? Did the client's own page appear last month and drop out this month?
This leaderboard ranks monitoring tools for agencies on that deliverable: a per-client, per-prompt citation list with month-over-month changes, produced at a sane cost per client. If you're choosing on seats, white-label portals, and dashboards instead, our agency tool ranking covers that angle.
How we ranked this
We scored each tool on what it takes to send a client this every month: the prompts tracked, the brand mentions in ChatGPT and other engines, every cited URL split into owned and third-party, what changed since last month, and three recommended actions.
- Citation depth. Page-level URLs per prompt, not just domain counts. Reddit, YouTube, and offsite sources broken out, because those become outreach tasks.
- Change over time. Citation trends, not a single snapshot you have to diff by hand.
- Mentions alongside citations. Brand monitoring and citation data on the same prompt set.
- Cost per client at ten and at twenty-five clients, including seats and per-domain fees.
- Export path. Looker Studio, API, or Slack, so the report doesn't get rebuilt in a spreadsheet every month.
The ranking
- Promptwatch. Citation analytics and citation trends per client, on flat agency plans.
- AthenaHQ. Unlimited seats and API on Starter; citation depth isn't documented.
- Scrunch AI. Strong engine coverage, weak exports, weekly data.
- Profound. Citation share by prompt cluster, at Enterprise prices.
- Semrush AI Toolkit. Fine for one client, punishing at twenty.
- Ahrefs Brand Radar. No per-client structure and a documented ChatGPT undercount.
- Peec AI. Agency tier with white-label, source breakdowns, models sold separately.
- Otterly.AI. Looker Studio on Standard, no PDF export, stale data.
Where each tool drops points
Promptwatch has the deepest citation layer on this list. Citation analytics work at page and domain level, with Reddit citations, YouTube citations, offsite mentions, and citation-type breakdowns. Citation trends show how sources and volume move over time, so "your pricing page dropped out of three ChatGPT answers in September" comes straight out of the tool instead of a manual diff. The self-serve agency plans include unlimited projects and prompts and 10 seats: Kick-off at $199/mo (7-day trial, 10,000 responses, 10M crawler logs), Growth at $399/mo (25,000 responses, 25M crawler logs), and Scale at $799/mo (65,000 responses, 100M crawler logs). Responses are the shared budget. Ten clients on Kick-off works out to about 1,000 responses each, so plan prompt counts and engines per client against that. Reports go out through Looker Studio, Slack, the REST API, or the MCP server. Where it drops points: white-label is listed under Enterprise and custom pricing, not the self-serve tiers. The self-serve ladder also stops at 65,000 responses.
AthenaHQ gives agencies unlimited seats with role-based access on every tier and API access on Starter ($295/mo). The listing documents a GEO score that blends citations, sentiment, and traffic, but not page-level citation analytics. The ACE Citation Engine is Enterprise-gated, reported around $2,000+/mo. Credits per AI response make multi-client budgets hard to forecast.
Scrunch AI covers up to nine engines with competitor benchmarking. For agencies, the listing's top G2 complaint is the problem: weak reporting, with users exporting to Excel to build client charts. Data refreshes weekly. Starter includes 3 seats, with extra seats at $25/mo.
Profound reports citation share and competitor cite-rates by prompt cluster, which is close to the deliverable. But Starter is ChatGPT only with one seat, Growth is three engines and three seats at $399/mo annual, and the full product is Enterprise from around $40k a year. G2 reviewers on the listing report citation counts that don't match manual ChatGPT checks. That's a hard thing to explain to a client.
Semrush AI Toolkit charges $99/mo per domain, plus $99/mo per extra user and $60/mo per 50 extra prompts. One client is easy. Twenty is $1,980/mo before seats, on prompts the listing describes as AI-generated approximations.
Ahrefs Brand Radar has no white-label or per-client structure according to its listing, so agency use gets expensive fast. An independent test cited on the listing found it reporting 3 ChatGPT mentions where manual checks verified 123.
Peec AI has an Agency tier from $245/mo with multi-client structure and white-label reporting, plus source and citation breakdowns. Each tier includes three models, with extra models at $35 to $165/mo each, and there's no historical backfill for a new client.
Otterly.AI exports to Looker Studio on Standard ($189/mo, 100 prompts) and has unlimited seats. The listing notes no PDF export, data up to seven days stale, and Gemini, Claude, and AI Mode as paid add-ons.
The monthly citation report, built in Promptwatch
One project per client. Track 20 to 50 prompts per client, tagged by topic so the report groups naturally. Add the client's main competitors. Then build the report in this order.
First, the citation list. For each prompt in ChatGPT, list the cited URLs and mark each one as client-owned, competitor-owned, or third-party. Second, the change. Use citation trends to show what entered and left since last month. Third, the mention context. Brand mentions and sentiment on the same prompts, so the client sees whether a lost citation also cost them the recommendation. Fourth, the actions. Third-party Reddit and YouTube citations become outreach or community tasks. Owned pages that dropped out become content fixes. On Kick-off and above, Agent Analytics crawler logs show whether ChatGPTBot is still fetching a dropped page, which separates a content problem from an access problem.
Push the summary to Looker Studio next to the client's GA4 data, or post it to the client's Slack channel.
The recommendation
If citations are the deliverable, Promptwatch is the tool to trial first. It's the only row here with page-level citation analytics, citation trends, and crawler logs on flat agency plans with unlimited projects. Start Kick-off at promptwatch.com with your three most demanding clients, send one citation report each, and see which one gets a reply asking for more.
