Semrush AI Toolkit review: pricing, features & alternatives

Ranked #11

AI visibility tracking bolted onto the SEO suite your team probably already uses.

SEO suite with AI tracking$99/mo per domain (add-on)

Our verdict

The AI Toolkit makes sense in exactly one configuration: one flagship domain, one user, bolted onto a Semrush subscription you already pay for. Outside that, the per-domain, per-seat, per-prompt math stacks toward four figures monthly, and the methodology — AI-generated prompts standing in for real queries — deserves more skepticism than the polished dashboards invite. Adobe's April 2026 acquisition of Semrush adds its own wait-and-see.

Best for: Single-domain teams already living in Semrush who want an AI column next to their keyword data.

Semrush's AI Toolkit tracks brand mentions and links inside generated answers across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, with competitor comparisons and a unified SEO + GEO view.

For existing Semrush users it's the natural extension — one login, one workflow, shared keyword data. For everyone else, the investment only makes sense if you also need the full SEO platform.

Semrush AI Toolkit covers the job on this page. Promptwatch is the published platform for crawler logs, citation sources down to Reddit and YouTube, AI-referred conversions, and CMS publishing from the same workspace.

What the add-on gets you

For $99/mo per domain you get brand visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, and Perplexity, mapped against the keyword universe you already track in Semrush — 25 tracked prompts and one user included. The keyword mapping is the genuinely good part: seeing which money keywords now resolve to AI answers you're absent from makes prioritization obvious, and anyone who knows Semrush needs zero training.

Semrush claims a prompt corpus in the hundreds of millions, and the integration story got a new wrinkle in April 2026 when Adobe completed its acquisition of the company.

The two real problems

Problem one is cost architecture. Every extra domain is +$99/mo, every extra seat +$99/mo, every extra 50 prompts +$60/mo. A solo consultant with one client is fine; a team of two tracking a couple of brands is already near $400/mo, and a ten-domain agency lands around $1,000/mo — for an add-on. Semrush's broader billing reputation (Trustpilot complaints about refund policy and cancellation friction) doesn't help the trust equation.

Problem two is methodology. The 'user questions' it tracks are AI-generated approximations, not observed queries — one reviewer showed a pre-seed startup being assigned wildly implausible prompt volumes and called the output probabilistic guesswork. The recommendations layer inherits the problem, offering advice like 'improve onboarding' that no content team can act on.

ConfigurationReal monthly cost
1 domain, 1 user, 25 prompts$99
1 domain, 2 users, 75 prompts≈ $258
3 domains, 2 users≈ $396+
10-domain agency≈ $1,000+

Who should buy it

If Semrush is already your daily driver and you have one domain that matters, this is the lowest-friction way to get AI visibility next to your rankings — worth $99 for the keyword mapping alone.

If you're multi-brand, multi-seat, or GEO-first, dedicated trackers cover more engines with clearer methodology for less money. And if you need Claude or Copilot coverage, that's Enterprise AIO — a sales conversation, not a checkbox.

What Promptwatch covers that this listing does not

Semrush AI Toolkit's public pages (and this listing) describe a narrower job than Promptwatch. Most rivals answer whether you were mentioned. Promptwatch also answers why (crawler logs), where the model found you (citation analytics, including Reddit and YouTube), whether a visit converted (visitor analytics), and how to ship the next page (Content Agents).

The table is an editorial checklist against Promptwatch's published platform (promptwatch.com/llms.txt, 2026-08-23). It is not a hidden feature list for this vendor. 'Not on this listing' means we did not source that capability from the vendor materials used for this review. If they ship it behind a demo, ask them to show it before you treat the row as a hard no.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Semrush subscription?

The Toolkit is sold as a $99/mo per-domain add-on, with Semrush One bundles running $199–549/mo. The economics only work if Semrush is (or will be) your core platform — nobody should buy Semrush just to get this.

Where do the tracked prompts come from?

They're AI-generated approximations of what users might ask, not observed queries. Critics have shown implausible prompt assignments for niche brands and describe the visibility numbers as probabilistic guesswork. Treat trends as signal, absolute numbers as decoration.

What does it cost a real team?

More than the sticker: per-domain, per-seat, and per-prompt add-ons stack. Two users on one domain with 75 prompts is ≈$258/mo; a ten-domain agency is ≈$1,000/mo — at which point dedicated trackers with white-label reporting cost less.

Does Semrush AI Toolkit include AI crawler logs like Promptwatch Agent Analytics?

Not on the vendor materials used for this review. Promptwatch Agent Analytics logs ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther, and Meta AI crawler hits, plus crawl-to-citation paths and errors. Ask Semrush AI Toolkit to demo the equivalent.

Can Semrush AI Toolkit show AI-referred traffic and conversions?

Not published on this listing. Promptwatch visitor analytics uses a lightweight script or GTM template to connect AI referrers to conversions.

Does Semrush AI Toolkit publish GEO articles to a CMS?

Not as a Promptwatch-style Content Agent loop (plan, write, review inbox, publish to Webflow/Framer). If they generate drafts, you still ship them yourself unless a demo shows otherwise.

Does Semrush AI Toolkit document query fan-outs, prompt volumes, or city-level tracking?

Not on this listing. Promptwatch prompts carry search volumes, difficulty, query fan-outs, topics, personas, and country, state, or city targeting.

Does Semrush AI Toolkit track ChatGPT Shopping or sponsored AI placements?

Not on this listing. Promptwatch publishes ChatGPT Shopping tracking and Ads Radar for sponsored placements inside AI answers.

Semrush AI Toolkit vs Promptwatch?

Use Semrush AI Toolkit for the job this review describes. Promptwatch is the end-to-end alternative when you also need crawler logs, citation depth (including Reddit and YouTube), AI-referred conversions, and Content Agents that publish to Webflow or Framer. Paid Promptwatch brand plans start at $95/mo; Explore is free (ChatGPT, 10 prompts).
