WP SEO AI vs Surfer (2026): Done-for-You WordPress Content or an Editor With an AI Tracker?

WP SEO AI writes and publishes content for you inside WordPress. Surfer gives your writers a scoring editor, with AI tracking from 25 weekly ChatGPT prompts. Which one measures AI visibility, and where Promptwatch fits.

WP SEO AI and Surfer both start from content. The overlap ends there.

WP SEO AI is a managed program for WordPress. Its plugin builds topical maps, writes posts with an AI writer trained on your services and style, publishes them, then prunes and edits what's already live. A customer success manager directs the work. Surfer is a tool your writers open. They draft in its editor, it scores the page against search results, and they revise until the score looks right.

This site cares about one thing in that pairing: once the content exists, which tool can tell you whether AI answers cite it, and whether that sends visitors? Neither is built mainly for that question, so Promptwatch sits in the third column.

What WP SEO AI does for content

The appeal is volume without hiring. Topic research, topical maps, writing, publishing, content improvement, pruning, cannibalization checks and mass edits all happen in the plugin, inside the page builder you already use (Gutenberg, Classic Editor, Elementor, Divi or Beaver Builder). Knowledge bases keep the writing close to your own services. Lead forms can be embedded in posts. Query fan-out analysis shapes pages for how AI engines break a question apart.

The limits are commercial more than technical. You can't see a price before a sales call, you commit to 12 months, there's no trial, and it only runs on WordPress. On the measurement side, no prompt allowance is published and the bot report doesn't name user agents or link a crawl to a citation.

What Surfer does for content

Surfer is the familiar choice for teams that already have writers. The editor gives them a working brief and a score, SERP and answer analysis shows what competing pages cover, and content audits flag existing pages to update. It costs a known amount, starting at $99/mo.

Two cautions from our Surfer review. An independent 200-article test found its scores didn't predict rankings, and writers who chase the score literally can end up with keyword-stuffed prose. Billing draws more complaints than any feature: charges after cancellation, no way to remove a saved card, and that 7-day refund window.

The AI tracking gap

This is where the comparison turns. Surfer's AI tracker on Essential is 25 prompts, checked weekly, on ChatGPT alone. That's enough for a spot check and not much more. Scale at $219/mo gets you 50 prompts daily across five engines. Real coverage beyond that is a separate standalone product priced at $95 to $365 a month.

WP SEO AI covers more engines out of the box, six on its GEO page, and probes each one daily. It also counts AI bot visits and reads conversions from GA4 by channel. On paper that is more AI measurement than Surfer offers. You just can't see the limits until you've signed.

Neither documents the link between a published page, the bot that crawled it, and the citation that followed.

Where Promptwatch fits

Promptwatch starts where both leave off. Essential is $95/mo, cheaper than Surfer Essential, with a 7-day trial. Its 50 daily prompts run across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral and Copilot, plus AI Overviews and AI Mode. That's twice Surfer Essential's prompt count, refreshed seven times as often, on far more engines.

From Professional at $245/mo, Agent Analytics shows which named crawler (ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther, the Meta AI crawler) fetched which page, and whether a citation followed. The Page Tracker then follows each published URL through crawls, citations and AI clicks. Visitor analytics records AI-referred sessions and conversions without needing GA4.

It writes, too. Content Agents run a gap analysis, draft the missing page and, once you approve it in the review inbox, publish to WordPress (through an official plugin), Webflow or Framer. Promptwatch replaces neither Surfer's editor nor WP SEO AI's success manager. What it adds is the proof that the content worked.

Verdict

Pick WP SEO AI if you're a WordPress business that wants content, SEO and ads produced for you and will commit to a year. Pick Surfer if your writers need an editor and you only want a light read on ChatGPT.

If the content exists to win AI answers, measure that directly. Start with Promptwatch's free plan or Essential trial.

FAQ

Does Surfer track Perplexity or Gemini?

Our listing shows five engines on Scale ($219/mo) without naming them. Essential tracks ChatGPT only.

Can WP SEO AI publish to a non-WordPress site?

No. The pricing page says it doesn't work with Shopify, Webflow or custom-built sites.

Can I keep Surfer and add Promptwatch?

Yes. The two don't overlap much: draft in Surfer, then let Promptwatch show whether those pages get crawled and cited.
