AthenaHQ vs BrandRank.AI (2026): an action queue or a brand-risk audit?
AthenaHQ turns AI visibility into tasks from a free tier and $295/mo. BrandRank.AI sells strategist-reviewed Recommendation Share and brand-risk scoring on annual, unpriced plans. Who each one is for, with Promptwatch as the benchmark.
AthenaHQ and BrandRank.AI both track brands across seven or more AI engines. After that they split. AthenaHQ is built for the marketer who wants to raise visibility, and it turns every gap into a task. BrandRank is built for the brand owner who worries about what the answer says: whether the AI recommends you, and whether it repeats something false or damaging.
Which team is buying matters more than any feature here. A growth or SEO team will want AthenaHQ. A brand, comms or legal team at a large consumer company is BrandRank's audience. Promptwatch is our benchmark because it serves the first team fully and part of the second.

AthenaHQ: built to raise the number
AthenaHQ was founded by former Google Search and DeepMind engineers, with YC backing. Its Action Center is why people buy it. A missing citation becomes a ticket: add this schema, rewrite this answer block, tag these entities. Schema and entity tagging can run at scale. Seats are unlimited and API access is on Starter. GA4, Shopify and Webflow connect visibility to revenue. G2 averages sit around 4.9/5.
The trade-offs are cost control and reach. Usage is billed in credits, one per AI response, so cadence and engine count drive the bill. Starter tracks one country. Personas, multi-region and the ACE Citation Engine are Enterprise features at a reported $2,000+ a month. There is no Reddit monitoring, and recommendations usually need an editor's pass before they ship.
BrandRank.AI: built to defend the brand
BrandRank is a Cincinnati company led by Pete Blackshaw, formerly Global Head of Digital at Nestlé, and Hank Hudepohl, formerly at TripAdvisor and Paycor. Its view is that being mentioned proves little. What it measures instead is Recommendation Share: the share of answers where the engine actually tells the user to choose your brand. Three sub-scores feed into that view, covering visibility, vulnerability and content readiness.
AthenaHQ has nothing like its Brand Risk Monitor. That module reads answers for damaging content, for example an old product recall coming back or a rival's problem attributed to your brand, grades the harm in one of seven categories, and raises an alert. On Strategist and above, a named strategist reviews findings each quarter. The site pitches those reviews to Legal, HR, Investor Relations and the board.
Buying is slow. No tier has a published price. All plans are annual. The FAQ says you start with a demo and a pilot, with a baseline promised within 30 days. Because BrandRank defines Recommendation Share itself, you cannot benchmark it against a share-of-voice chart from another vendor. The +300% visibility figure for a CPG launch is the vendor's.
Head to head
- Speed to first data: AthenaHQ. Free tier today against a demo-and-pilot cycle.
- Price you can plan around: AthenaHQ publishes one; BrandRank publishes none. Credits make AthenaHQ's real number move, though.
- Fixing visibility: AthenaHQ, by a distance.
- Catching harmful or false claims: BrandRank. AthenaHQ publishes sentiment, not damage scoring.
- Board-level reporting with a human in the loop: BrandRank.
- Multi-brand portfolio: BrandRank Orchestrator, with multi-brand dashboards and data feeds. AthenaHQ's multi-region features need Enterprise.
Where Promptwatch fits
Promptwatch covers AthenaHQ's job and adds what both tools leave out. Unified Actions produces an AI-generated to-do list from your visibility data. Agent Chat lets a brand manager ask questions of live data in plain language. That partly answers BrandRank's strategist, though it does not replace one. Sentiment analysis, competitive benchmarking and share of voice are part of the same workspace.
The deeper difference is in sources. When an answer gets your brand wrong, you need to know where the model read it. Citation analytics shows the cited pages and domains, and Reddit threads, YouTube videos and offsite mentions each get their own view. Citation trends show whether a bad source is gaining weight. Agent Analytics, from Professional at $245/mo, logs which of your own pages ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot fetch, so you can see whether your correction page is being read at all. Content Agents can then write and publish that page to Webflow or Framer.
Portfolio owners can start on Business ($579/mo), which allows five projects and 350 prompts, or ask for an Enterprise plan with SSO, white-label and dedicated support.
BrandRank still wins on two points. Promptwatch does not list a damage-category risk score, and it does not include a human strategist review.
Verdict
AthenaHQ is the better tool for teams whose goal is more AI visibility, provided they watch credit usage. BrandRank suits large consumer brands where an inaccurate AI answer is a legal or reputational problem and a strategist-led annual program fits the budget. For most buyers we would evaluate Promptwatch first. It gives you AthenaHQ-style actions at fixed prices, plus the citation sources and crawler logs you need to trace where a wrong answer came from.
FAQ
Does AthenaHQ check AI answers for false claims?
It scores sentiment as part of its GEO score. It does not publish a damage-category risk monitor like BrandRank's.
How much does BrandRank.AI cost?
BrandRank does not publish prices. Scout, Strategist and Orchestrator are annual subscriptions, and onboarding starts with a demo and pilot.
Is Promptwatch an alternative to AthenaHQ and BrandRank.AI?
For visibility work, yes: it offers an action list, sentiment, citation sources and crawler logs at published prices. For quarterly strategist reviews and brand-damage scoring, BrandRank covers ground Promptwatch does not list.
