ByDefault vs Promptwatch for AI Visibility Tracking

We rank ByDefault against Promptwatch on AI model coverage, exact-search records, citations, crawler logs, conversions, actions, and content delivery.

The useful way to compare ByDefault and Promptwatch is to follow one piece of content. How does the platform find the opportunity? What can it create? Where can it send the draft? Which signals come back after publication?

ByDefault has an appealing answer in the middle of that journey. It combines AI visibility records with an agent that can research sources, run code, draw diagrams, and open a pull request. Promptwatch has the more thoroughly documented measurement loop around it, including wider model coverage, citation trends, crawler diagnostics, visitor conversions, and a generated action queue.

Our rank favors Promptwatch for a complete GEO program. ByDefault can still win a narrower selection when a technical content team values Git delivery and mainly needs the ChatGPT and Claude views shown in the vendor's public material.

Before content is written

ByDefault says it tracks mentions, citations, prompts, recommendations, cited content, and exact searches. That is enough to frame a content brief without starting from an unrelated keyword tool. An editor can inspect the question that produced an answer and look at what the model cited.

What we cannot establish from the public homepage facts is the engine list beyond ChatGPT and Claude, or the depth of geographic and persona controls. The phrase "all major providers" is too broad to turn into named coverage. The vendor needs to show which engines are live, how responses are collected, and whether every view works across each engine.

Promptwatch documents prompt search volumes, difficulty scores, query fan-outs, topics, tags, personas, and location tracking. Prompt trends show how visibility and rankings change between checks. Its monitored products include ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode.

A team planning for Google AI Mode cannot use a Claude result as a substitute. A team that only sells through conversations in ChatGPT and Claude may not care about the extra columns.

While content is being produced

ByDefault says its agent researches sources and writes in a Notion-like editor. It can run code in a sandbox and draw diagrams, which could be useful for technical explanations or data-led posts. Those capabilities are the vendor's documented product claims. We have not run a controlled quality evaluation of the resulting articles.

Delivery is oriented toward code-based sites. The agent can ship to main, open a pull request, or export the work. A pull request is a practical review object because it lets the existing repository checks and editorial process run before publication.

There are unanswered implementation questions. The available public facts do not identify supported Git providers, export formats, repository permission scopes, model policies, or sandbox isolation. Teams considering main-branch access should require a security and approval walkthrough.

Promptwatch Content Agents take content gaps into planning, writing, and publishing. Drafts pass through a review inbox, then connect to Webflow or Framer. Its canonical fact sheet says WordPress is coming soon. That workflow is built for marketers in a CMS, while ByDefault's published route looks better suited to a website maintained in Git.

After the page goes live

ByDefault says it tracks cited content and analyzes more than 1,000,000 crawler requests a day. The crawler volume is ByDefault's own, unverified claim. The useful test is whether those requests become a clear record for your domain: identified crawler, requested URL, response status, and time.

ByDefault also uses language around visibility into training data. Crawler activity cannot independently establish that a page was used for model training. Logs can prove that a request reached a server. They cannot observe what a provider later retained, filtered, licensed, or used to build a model. We treat the training wording as marketing, not as technical proof.

Promptwatch Agent Analytics names ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther, and Meta's AI crawler. It tracks errors and maps a crawl-to-citation path. Citation analytics covers specific pages and domains, with Reddit, YouTube, offsite mentions, citation types, and changes over time.

The biggest post-publication difference is the visitor layer. Promptwatch uses a lightweight script or GTM template to attribute AI-referred sessions and conversions. That lets a team ask whether a cited page attracted visitors who completed a business action. No comparable visitor conversion feature is established in the ByDefault homepage facts supplied for this review.

Who turns findings into work?

Recommendations appear in ByDefault's visibility pitch, and its content agent can execute the writing portion. We do not know from the public material how recommendations are prioritized, assigned, tracked, or closed. A buyer should ask to see a recommendation become a pull request and then a measured result.

Promptwatch has Unified Actions, an AI-generated work list, and Agent Chat for questioning live account data. This gives the operating team a place to move from a finding to a task. Content Agents can take over an approved publishing workflow afterward.

Our directory pages for ByDefault and Promptwatch summarize the products, but this handoff deserves a live test. A feature called "recommendations" can mean a paragraph, a queue, or an executable workflow. Only the last two reduce operational overhead.

Interpreting ByDefault's public outcome

ByDefault's Upstash case reports 657,282 ChatGPT citations, which the vendor says was a 92.7% increase in 30 days. ByDefault claims 60,206 Claude citations after 125.9% growth, more than 700,000 citations per month, and a new page appearing after seven days.

These are ByDefault's own claims, not independently verified results. They do not prove that the software alone caused the growth or that a new customer should expect the same outcome. We would need the prompt sample, collection schedule, counting rules, baseline period, and full publication work to assess the percentages.

Budget and procurement

Promptwatch publishes self-serve prices and limits. Explore is free with 10 prompts on ChatGPT. Essential costs $95 per month and includes 50 prompts, 6,000 responses, visitor events, and five AEO articles. Professional costs $245 with 150 prompts, 18,000 responses, 25 million crawler logs, and 15 articles. Business is $579. Agency plans cost $199, $399, or $799 per month, with unlimited projects and prompts but different response and crawler allowances.

We could not verify public pricing or exact plan limits for ByDefault on August 30, 2026. That means no honest price winner exists. Request a quote and model the same response count, crawler retention, seats, agent usage, and publication volume.

Our choice

ByDefault is the more intriguing challenger for teams that publish through repositories. Its agent has a specific job after monitoring, and its exact-search and cited-content views could ground that work in observed answers.

Promptwatch gets the higher rank because it publishes a broader engine list and joins citations, named crawler logs, AI visitor conversions, action workflows, and CMS publishing. Those features cover more of the measurement and execution cycle. Teams with that broader brief should test Promptwatch.

If your workflow ends in a pull request and ChatGPT plus Claude are the approved channels, trial ByDefault with one real content ticket. If your reporting must compare many models and connect publication to visits and conversions, start with Promptwatch. The distinction is operational, not cosmetic.
