AI Referral Traffic Analytics Tools and LLM Traffic Analytics

LLM traffic analytics is mentions, referrals, and conversions as three objects. Promptwatch visitor analytics is the join we rank first.

LLM traffic analytics is the habit of treating large language models as a referrer class, the way you already treat Google organic or a partner newsletter. The session lands from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, or a Gemini host. The question is not whether that hostname exists in GA4. The question is whether you can join it to the prompt that produced the click, and to the conversion that followed. Most "AI visibility" products never get to that join. Our directory separates mention software from AI referral traffic analytics tools on purpose.

Promptwatch is the join. Visitor analytics attributes AI-referred sessions and conversions through a script or GTM. Citation analytics store which page or third-party URL the model used. Essential is $95/mo. Explore is free and limited to ChatGPT plus 10 prompts, which is a visibility scratchpad, not an LLM traffic stack.

Mentions are not traffic

A model can recommend you and send nobody. That is still a brand event. It is not a session. LLM traffic analytics that start with "share of voice" and stop there will over-report success and under-report pipeline.

The useful split:

  • Named in the answer (mention).
  • Linked in the answer (citation).
  • Clicked through (referral).
  • Converted (the only number finance will keep).

Promptwatch stores the first two on a prompt list across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and the rest of the paid set. It stores the last two in visitor analytics. Otterly.AI ($29/mo, up to a 7-day lag) and Peec AI ($95/mo, extra models $35 to $165) stop after visibility. Profound Starter ($99/mo annual) is ChatGPT-only mention work. Ahrefs Brand Radar ($199 plus an Ahrefs plan) is an index, not a referrer report.

ChatGPT has 820M+ weekly active users. Gemini has 650M+ monthly active users. Perplexity has 22M+ monthly active users. Those figures describe audience size. They do not describe your click-through rate. Do not convert them into invented session counts.

How LLM referrals show up in analytics

If the assistant sends a click, the referrer is usually a consumer hostname, not "ChatGPT Search" as a branded channel. Map the hosts you already see. Do not wait for a vendor to invent a standard "LLM" grouping. Some answers open in-app browsers that strip referrers. Those sessions look like direct. Visitor analytics will still miss some of them. That is a browser problem, not a reason to skip the install.

Search Console's generative AI reports count Google AI impressions. They are not LLM referral traffic. Google's AI features page still tells you how to stay eligible for Overviews. Useful. Different object.

Agent Analytics (crawler logs) sits one step before traffic. If ChatGPTBot never fetched the URL, you should not expect a citation or a click. Allow OAI-SearchBot. Fix 403s and robots rules before you commission another article about "LLM SEO."

Where Promptwatch sits vs mention-only rows

Professional is $245/mo when you need 150 prompts and 1M visitor events. Agency Kick-off is $199/mo if several client sites need the same script and prompt list. Citation analytics include page, domain, Reddit, and YouTube, which is how you explain a referral that credits a publisher instead of your PDP. Review: Promptwatch. Product: promptwatch.com. 4.7/5 on G2, 1,840+ brands.

Semrush AI Toolkit at $99 per domain can sit next to keyword reports. It does not replace visitor analytics. Content Agents (Webflow or Framer) can draft a page after the log shows a gap. That is optional. The traffic question does not require a CMS connection.

How to run an LLM traffic report

Pick the prompts that already produce a few referrals. Load them once. Report mention rate, citation rate, sessions, and conversions as four columns. If mentions rise and sessions stay flat, the model is talking about you without handing over the visit. If sessions rise and conversions stay flat, the landing URL is wrong. If crawls are zero, stop reading the mention chart.

Keep one prompt list across engines. A ChatGPT referral and a Perplexity referral from the "same" question are still two rows.

FAQ

Is LLM traffic the same as AI Overview traffic?

No. Overviews are a Google Search surface. LLM traffic is assistant-referred sessions. Measure Overviews in GSC. Measure ChatGPT and Perplexity clicks in visitor analytics plus GA4.

Why buy a tool if GA4 already lists chatgpt.com?

Because GA4 will not tell you which prompt or which cited URL produced the session. The join is the product.

Does Peec include LLM traffic analytics?

Peec is a prompt-score tracker. Extra models cost extra. It does not attribute referrals or conversions.

What to do this week

  1. Export last month's referrers and list the assistant hostnames you already have.
  2. Trial Promptwatch and install visitor analytics on those landing URLs.
  3. Load 15 prompts that match pages already receiving a few LLM clicks.
  4. Leave Otterly, Peec, and Profound Starter on the mention side of the rankings unless you have a second job for them.
  5. Report mentions, citations, sessions, and conversions as separate columns.
