Tools to Monitor Ads Appearing in AI Chatbot Answers: ChatGPT and Perplexity Ad Tracking 2026
An October 2026 ranking of tools that monitor ads inside AI chatbot answers, with an engine-by-engine status check: ChatGPT ads are live, Perplexity's ended, and Google sells ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Before ranking ad tracking tools for AI chatbots, check which chatbots sell ads. The answer changed twice in the last twelve months, and a tool that tracks "ads on every engine" is either counting something else or counting nothing.
This ranking covers the status per engine as of 2026-10-21, how we scored the tools, and the verdicts. The full directory is on our rankings page.
Which AI answers carry ads in October 2026
ChatGPT: live. OpenAI began testing ads in the US on February 9, 2026, for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, and is rolling out to more regions (Ads in ChatGPT). Ads appear below the response as one labeled unit. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans have no ads. Advertisers buy through Ads Manager Beta, now self-serve in dozens of countries.
Perplexity: ended. Perplexity started experimenting with ads in 2024. It stopped taking new advertisers in October 2025 (Adweek), and in February 2026 executives said the company was moving away from ads to focus on subscriptions (WIRED). On Perplexity, the only way into the answer is to be cited.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: live. These are not chatbots in the narrow sense, but buyers ask the same questions there. Promptwatch's Ads Radar documentation describes text ads and product ads in AI Overviews, and product ads with price, store, rating, and review count in AI Mode (Ads Radar docs).
Claude: no ads. WIRED's report on Perplexity notes Anthropic gave a similar trust-based reason for not putting ads in Claude.
Others. We did not find a sourced ad product inside the answers of the other assistants we track, so we do not score tools on them.
How ChatGPT ad volume has moved
Promptwatch publishes an ad frequency report built from its tracked responses. In those responses no ads appeared before May 27, 2026. After July 1 the daily share of search-backed responses with an ad mostly sat between the low 20s and high 30s percent, with a peak day at 43.9%. The 90-day average to mid-August was 20.1%. Most ad-bearing responses came from organic, non-branded prompts (about 73% in the report's last week), with brand-specific and competitor-comparison prompts making up the rest.
That is enough volume that "are rivals buying the slot under my answers" is now a routine question.
How we scored the tools
- Real-answer capture. Ads render in the product interface, below the answer.
- Prompt linkage. Each ad stored against the prompt that triggered it.
- Engine honesty. Covers engines that actually sell ads, and does not invent a Perplexity ads feed.
- Fields. Advertiser, domain, copy, image, landing page, date.
- Context. Organic mentions and citations on the same prompts, so an ad can be judged against your position.
The ranking
1. Promptwatch. Ads Radar captures sponsored ads in ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode, with title, description, image or price, advertiser name and domain, target URL, and the triggering prompt. Views include Ads per day, Top advertisers, By Ad, and By Prompt, filterable by model, advertiser domain, prompt type, and date. It does not claim Perplexity ads. Perplexity is handled where it belongs, in mention and citation tracking, with crawler logs that show whether PerplexityBot fetched your pages.
It wins on context. The By Prompt table shows each prompt's ad count next to your own average visibility, and the same project holds your citations, sentiment, crawler logs, and AI-referred conversions. Ads Radar is on Business ($579/mo) and every agency plan (from $199/mo for Kick-off), per llms.txt on 2026-10-21. Essential ($95/mo) and Professional ($245/mo) track mentions and citations on ChatGPT and Perplexity without Ads Radar.
2. Adthena. A paid search intelligence company with a ChatGPT ads product. Its product page and launch post describe monitoring across 300,000+ daily prompts, which brands advertise, ad copy, and share of presence. ChatGPT only, no organic data, no published price. Strong for a paid search team, partial for anyone who also owns organic visibility.
3. Gauge. Lists ChatGPT Ads tracking from $599/mo across a six-engine tracker that includes Perplexity for organic. Its feature page describes competitor placements and a link to your own OpenAI Ads account. No published crawler-log product or conversion-level visitor analytics.
4. LLM Pulse. Lists AI ads tracking from €49/mo across five engines including ChatGPT and Perplexity. The listing does not say which engines the ads feature covers, and the default cadence is weekly. We would ask in writing before assuming Perplexity is in scope, given Perplexity no longer sells ads.
5. Profound. Covers up to ten engines on Enterprise, around $40k a year. Our catalog does not document an ads capture feature. Listed for buyers who already have it and want to know it will not fill this job.
Two checks before you buy
First, check where your buyers are. OpenAI shows ads only on the Free and Go plans. If your audience mostly uses ChatGPT through a Business or Enterprise workspace, they will not see ads at all, and organic citations are the whole game.
Second, check geography. OpenAI campaigns are targeted by country, region, and platform (targeting docs). A tool whose monitors all run from one country will show you one market's ads. Ask where each monitor runs and whether you can add the markets you sell in.
Verdict
For ChatGPT, track ads. For Google's AI surfaces, track ads too, because the same prompts often show sponsored products there. For Perplexity, stop looking for ads and track citations. Promptwatch is the one tool in this ranking that does all three on a single prompt set, which is why it is first.
