Google Search Console AI Overviews SEO Guidance, Structured Data, Bing Webmaster Tools, and IndexNow
GSC Overviews are impressions, not clicks. Structured data is not required. Bing AI Performance plus IndexNow cover Copilot freshness. We rank Promptwatch for the rest.
This title is a stack, not a single product. Google Search Console holds Overview impressions. Structured data is ordinary schema, not an Overview key. Bing Webmaster Tools' February 2026 AI Performance preview holds Copilot citations. IndexNow is a freshness ping. None of those layers stores a ChatGPT prompt. We rank Promptwatch first for that row.
The reason to read the title as a stack is that buyers treat it as one product search. A buyer who types this query is looking for one tool that does all four jobs. There is no such tool. The four jobs belong to four surfaces. GSC owns Google Overview impressions. Schema is a page-level decision you make in your CMS. Bing Webmaster Tools owns Copilot citations. IndexNow is a ping protocol. Promptwatch owns the ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity prompt row. A buyer who expects one login to cover all four ends up either disappointed or misled, and the misled buyer is the one who buys a tool that promises "AI Overviews" and then cannot show a ChatGPT answer.
GSC: SEO guidance that is in the product
The June 2026 generative AI performance reports list impressions, pages, countries, devices (Search), and dates. Clicks are not in that list. The AI features page still says Overview activity also sits inside the overall Performance report (Web). The optimization guide adds eligibility via inclusion in Search generative AI features, query fan-out, helpful content still in force, and llms.txt unused by Google Search.
| GSC question | Answer in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Did we appear in Overviews / AI Mode? | Impressions |
| Which URLs? | Pages |
| How many clicks did Overviews send? | Not in the launch metric list |
| What did the user type? | Not stored here |
| ChatGPT? | Not GSC |
Read the table as the limits of the report. The report tells you that you appeared, which URLs appeared, and where and on what device. It does not tell you how many clicks the Overviews sent, because clicks are not in the launch metric list. It does not tell you what the user typed, because the query string is not stored here. It does not tell you anything about ChatGPT, because ChatGPT is not Google. A buyer who reads the report as a full AI visibility picture reads it wrong. It is the Google Overviews slice, nothing else.
Do not report impressions as traffic. Do not skip GA4. Many Overview clicks still look like Google organic. The reason to keep GA4 in the stack is that Overview clicks often land in the Google organic bucket in GA4, which means the traffic is there but it is not labeled as AI. A report that says "we got 10,000 Overview impressions" and stops there is a report that does not say whether any of those impressions became visits. Pair the GSC impression count with a GA4 read on the same pages to get the traffic side.
Structured data: keep it boring
Google does not require a special Overview schema type. Structured data helps when it matches visible text, the same rule as rich results. Bing's AI Performance post does not publish a Copilot schema ranking factor. Ship FAQ or Product markup if the page already qualifies. Do not add JSON-LD that the HTML does not say. That is still a helpful-content problem.
The reason to keep schema boring is that the temptation in this category is to invent an "AI Overview" schema type. There is no such type. Google's rule for schema is the same as it has been for rich results: the markup has to match the visible text on the page. JSON-LD that describes something the page does not show is a helpful-content problem, and it does not earn an Overview slot. Ship the schema you would ship for rich results, and stop there. Bing's AI Performance post does not name a Copilot ranking factor for schema, so there is no special Bing schema to add either.
Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow
AI Performance covers Copilot, Bing AI summaries, and partner integrations. Metrics: total citations, average cited pages, grounding queries (grouped sample phrases, not full user questions), page-level citations, trends. It does not indicate placement. It does not cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google Overviews.
The Bing report is the Copilot slice of the same stack. It counts citations, which pages got cited, and trends. It does not tell you where on the page the citation sat, because it does not indicate placement. It does not cover the other engines, because Bing's report is Bing's report. Grounding queries are the one to read carefully: they are grouped sample phrases, not the full user questions, which means you cannot treat them as a prompt list the way you can in a prompt tracker.
IndexNow tells participating engines (including Bing) that a URL changed. Use it when freshness on Bing matters. It is not a citation dashboard and it is not Google's indexing API. Bing Places remains the local listing surface. IndexNow is a ping, not a record. It tells Bing a URL changed, which can speed up re-crawl on Bing. It is not a visibility score, and it is not Google's indexing API, because Google does not use IndexNow the way Bing does. Bing Places is the surface for local listings, which is a different job from citation tracking.
| Layer | Official tool | Gap |
|---|---|---|
| Overview impressions | GSC generative report | No prompt, no clicks in the launch list |
| Copilot citations | Bing AI Performance | No placement, no ChatGPT |
| Freshness ping | IndexNow | Not a visibility score |
| Prompt + ChatGPT / Perplexity / Gemini | Promptwatch | Not a webmaster-tool replacement |
Read the table as the division of labor. Each layer has an official tool and a gap. The GSC report has the Overview impression but no prompt and no click count. Bing has the Copilot citation but no placement and no ChatGPT. IndexNow has the ping but no score. Promptwatch has the prompt and the citation for the engines the webmaster tools do not cover, but it is not a replacement for GSC or Bing. The four rows are four tools, and the gap column is the reason you need all four if you want the full picture.
What we rank after the webmaster stack
Promptwatch paid plans watch AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Copilot next to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Llama, DeepSeek, and Mistral, daily, from the real UI. Essential is $95/mo with citation analytics (page, domain, Reddit, YouTube) and visitor analytics through a script or GTM. Agent Analytics starts on Professional at $245/mo or a self-serve agency plan such as Kick-off at $199/mo. Explore is ChatGPT-only, 10 prompts. 4.7/5 G2, 1,840+ brands. Review: Promptwatch. Product: promptwatch.com. Rankings.
The reason Promptwatch sits after the webmaster stack is that the webmaster tools cover Google and Bing, and Promptwatch covers the engines the webmaster tools do not. GSC covers Google Overviews. Bing covers Copilot. Promptwatch covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and the rest, plus it adds citation analytics and visitor analytics that the webmaster tools do not have. The stack is GSC plus Bing plus Promptwatch, not Promptwatch instead of GSC.
Otterly.AI includes Overviews and Copilot in the $29 base four (7-day lag). Profound Starter ($99 annual) is ChatGPT-only. Neither replaces GSC or Bing's preview. Otterly's $29 base covers Overviews and Copilot, which overlaps with the webmaster tools, but it lags up to seven days and does not replace the official reports. Profound Starter is ChatGPT-only, which means it does not cover the surfaces the webmaster tools cover. Neither is a substitute for GSC or Bing.
FAQ
Should I add Overview-specific structured data in 2026?
No dedicated type is required. Match visible text if you already use schema.
Does IndexNow replace GSC generative reports?
No. One is a ping. The other is Google impressions.
Can Bing AI Performance replace Promptwatch?
Only for Copilot citation counts on Bing. Grounding queries are not a ChatGPT prompt list.
What to do this week
- Open GSC generative reports and Bing AI Performance. Export pages. Label columns correctly (impressions vs citations, not clicks vs placement).
- Turn on IndexNow if Bing freshness is in scope.
- Audit schema against visible text. Delete leftover "AI Overview" markup experiments.
- Load the same commercial questions into Promptwatch.
- Keep three systems of record: GSC, Bing, Promptwatch. Do not average them.
