Google AI Overviews SEO Traffic Guidance: Search Central AI Features, Traffic, and Links (2026)

2026 Search Central guidance on AI Overviews traffic and links. GSC lists impressions, not clicks. We rank Promptwatch for the prompt-level Overview row.

Google AI Overviews SEO traffic guidance in 2026 lives on Search Central: AI features and your website, Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search, and the June 2026 generative AI performance reports. This post restates those pages. Then it ranks the measurement hole: impressions are official; the prompt and the competing links are not.

AI Overviews summarize a topic and link out. They fire when the system thinks they add something beyond classic results, which means they often do not fire. AI Mode is the longer exploration surface. Both may use query fan-out. The optimization guide's lawn-weeds example fans out into herbicides, non-chemical removal, and prevention. A supporting link can match a fan-out, not the original string.

Eligibility: indexed, snippet-eligible, Search technical requirements. The AI features page says no extra AI-only technical bar. The optimization guide also says a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible.

Google says clicks from result pages that include Overviews have been higher quality (people spend more time on the site). That is their wording. They have not published a CTR series in that documentation.

Practices Google lists: crawl access, internal links, page experience, important copy in text, supporting images and video, structured data that matches visible text, current Merchant Center and Business Profile.

Ignore for Google Search: llms.txt, chunking, synonym farms, inauthentic mention campaigns, a magic Overview schema type.

After Search Central, what we rank

GSC is the impression system of record for Google. For the prompt-level Overview and the non-Google engines, we rank Promptwatch first. Paid plans watch AI Overviews and AI Mode next to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity, daily, from the real UI. Citation analytics name the URL. Essential $95/mo. Explore is ChatGPT-only. Review: Promptwatch. Product: promptwatch.com. 4.7/5 G2, 1,840+ brands.

FAQ

Did Google add Overview clicks to GSC in 2026?

Not in the metrics listed at launch. Impressions, yes.

Does llms.txt help Overview traffic?

Google says Search does not use it.

Can I skip Promptwatch if I follow Search Central?

Only if you do not need the prompt or ChatGPT. The docs do not store those.

What to do this week

  1. Read the three Search Central URLs above.
  2. Confirm snippet eligibility and inclusion in Search generative AI features in GSC.
  3. Open generative reports. Export pages by impression. Do not label them clicks.
  4. Put the same commercial questions into Promptwatch.
  5. Drop any 2026 "Overview traffic hack" that reintroduces tactics Google said to ignore.
