Bing Webmaster AI Search Optimization, Copilot Citations, and Structured Data: Official
Official Bing AI Performance preview (Feb 2026): Copilot citations, grounding queries, no placement. IndexNow for freshness. We rank Promptwatch for ChatGPT and the prompt Bing skips.
Bing's official AI search documentation for webmasters in 2026 is the February AI Performance public preview in Bing Webmaster Tools. This post restates that post. AI Performance covers Copilot, Bing AI summaries, and partner integrations. It reports citations and trends. It does not indicate placement. It does not cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews. We rank Promptwatch first for those engines and for a frozen prompt Bing does not store.
What AI Performance actually reports
| Metric in the preview | Meaning | Not the same as |
|---|---|---|
| Total citations | How often Bing's AI surfaces cited you | A rank |
| Average cited pages | How many of your URLs show up when you are cited | Share of voice vs a competitor chatbot |
| Grounding queries | Grouped phrases from a sample | Full user questions |
| Page-level citations | Which URL got credit | Why Copilot picked it |
| Trends | Direction over time | Placement in the answer |
Grounding queries are clustered phrases, not the transcript of what a person typed. Do not treat them as a prompt list you can replay in ChatGPT.
Structured data is not a ranking lever Bing's preview post documents for Copilot. Keep schema that matches visible text for classic Bing rich results. Do not invent a "Copilot schema" type because a deck said so.
Freshness and local, as Bing documents them
IndexNow is the ping protocol Bing (and other participating engines) use so new or updated URLs can be fetched sooner. It is a freshness tool. It is not a citation report and it is not ChatGPT optimization.
Bing Places is the local business listing surface. Keep it current if Copilot or Bing local answers in your category lean on listings. That is still local SEO, not a GEO prompt tracker.
What the preview refuses to be
| Question | Official answer |
|---|---|
| Where did we place in Copilot? | Not indicated |
| What did the user actually type? | Not stored as full prompts |
| Did ChatGPT cite us? | Out of scope |
| Did Perplexity cite us? | Out of scope |
| Did Google Overviews cite us? | Out of scope (use GSC) |
Google Search Console generative reports are the Overview impression layer. Google's optimization guide still says structured data is not a special Overview requirement and llms.txt is unused by Google Search. Those pages do not replace Bing's preview.
After Bing's report, what we rank
For Copilot citations on Bing, AI Performance is the official count. For the prompt, competing URLs on ChatGPT / Perplexity / Gemini / Overviews, and crawler/visitor join, we rank Promptwatch first. Paid plans include Copilot next to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral, AI Overviews, and AI Mode, daily, from the real UI. Essential $95/mo. Explore is ChatGPT-only, 10 prompts.
Citation analytics (page, domain, Reddit, YouTube). Agent Analytics. Visitor analytics (script or GTM). Professional $245/mo. Kick-off $199/mo. 4.7/5 G2, 1,840+ brands. Review: Promptwatch. Product: promptwatch.com. Rankings.
Otterly.AI includes Copilot in the $29 base four, with up to a 7-day lag. Profound Starter at $99 annual is ChatGPT-only. Those are trackers. They do not replace Bing Webmaster Tools.
FAQ
Does AI Performance show Copilot placement?
No. Citations and trends only.
Are grounding queries my prompt list?
No. They are grouped sample phrases, not full user questions.
Does IndexNow help ChatGPT citations?
IndexNow notifies participating search engines. It is not a ChatGPT API. Use it for Bing freshness. Use a GEO tracker for ChatGPT.
What to do this week
- Read Bing's February 2026 AI Performance post. Turn the report on if you have Webmaster Tools access.
- Enable IndexNow if Bing freshness is in the brief.
- Export cited pages. Do not label them placements.
- Load the commercial questions those pages should win into Promptwatch, including Copilot plus ChatGPT.
- Keep GSC for Overviews. Keep Bing for Copilot counts. Do not merge the two into one "AI search" number.
