AI Search Visibility Tracking for ChatGPT: SaaS Brand Mentions and Citations

How to measure SaaS brand mentions and citations inside ChatGPT answers on alternatives, best-software, and comparison prompts. Promptwatch first on this directory.

A SaaS brand already lives in Google Search Console, a product analytics tool, and usually a rank tracker. None of those files store the ChatGPT answer to "best [category] software," "[you] alternatives," or "[you] vs [competitor]." Those answers name two to five products. Sometimes they attach a URL. Often they lift a G2 roundup, a Reddit thread, or a YouTube roundup instead of your comparison page. AI search visibility tracking for ChatGPT is the log of whether you were named, cited, or skipped.

This is a measurement page, not a 10-tool SaaS stack ranking. The job here is narrower: brand mentions and citations inside ChatGPT, on the prompts a buyer actually types. The rest of the directory covers adjacent GEO software. ChatGPT publishes 820M+ weekly active users. That is audience size. It is not a forecast of your trial volume.

Promptwatch is the tool we send SaaS teams to for this job.

Mention and citation are different events

A mention is your product name in the generated answer. "Look at [you] if you need X" counts even when no link appears. A citation is a source the model points at: your docs, a competitor's alternatives page, a review site, Reddit, YouTube. You can be mentioned with no citation. You can be cited as a footnote while the prose names someone else. Treating those as one "visibility score" hides the work.

Page-level citations tell you which URL was used. Domain-level citations only tell you that something on the host appeared. If ChatGPT cites /blog/what-is-crm while your /compare/[competitor] page sits unused, the domain number looks fine and the money page is still dark. Promptwatch citation analytics split page, domain, Reddit, YouTube, and other offsite mentions, with type breakdowns and a trend view rather than a single count.

Personas matter because a founder asking "cheap [category] tools" and a procurement lead asking "[you] vs [competitor] for SOC 2" are not the same commercial event. Tag them. Country, state, or city targeting exists for the same reason: a US-average session is not the session a London buyer gets.

Prompts a SaaS team should load first

Write the questions sales already hears, not the H1s on your feature pages.

Category: "best [category] software," "best [category] tools for [role]," "[category] software for [company size]."

Alternatives: "[you] alternatives," "open source [you] alternative," "cheaper than [you]."

Head to head: "[you] vs [competitor]," "[you] vs [competitor] pricing," "[you] vs [competitor] for [use case]."

Branded: "[you] reviews," "is [you] worth it," "[you] pricing."

Twenty prompts is a working start. Fifty covers a product line if you keep the wording parallel across personas instead of inventing a new set for every landing page. Paid Promptwatch plans also monitor Gemini (650M+ monthly active users), Claude, Perplexity (22M+ monthly), Grok, Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral, Copilot, plus Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, from the real UIs, not API samples. Start the log on ChatGPT. Do not pretend one engine is the market.

Ranked tools for this measurement job

1. Promptwatch

Explore is free: 10 ChatGPT prompts, one project, one seat. Enough to see whether you appear on the five comparison questions you care about.

Essential is $95 a month with a 7-day trial: 1 project, 50 prompts, 6,000 responses, 200K visitor events, 5 AEO articles, 1 seat. Professional is $245: 2 projects, 150 prompts, 18,000 responses, 1M visitor events, 25M crawler logs, 15 AEO articles, 2 seats. Business is $579: 5 projects, 350 prompts, 42,000 responses, 10M visitor events, 100M crawler logs, 30 AEO articles, 5 seats. A product team with two brands or two regions usually lands on Professional. Agencies look at Kick-off at $199 (7-day trial): unlimited projects and prompts, 10 seats, 10,000 responses, 10M crawler logs. Growth is $399 with 25,000 responses and 25M logs. Scale is $799 with 65,000 responses and 100M logs. Annual is twelve months for the price of ten. Prices are also offered in euros. There is no $29 or $79 plan.

Agent Analytics (Professional and up, and the agency plans) logs ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther, and the Meta AI crawler, with a crawl-to-citation path, via Cloudflare, CloudFront, Fastly, Vercel, Netlify, Akamai, Google Cloud CDN, or custom HTTP. Visitor analytics attach AI-referred sessions to conversions through a script or GTM, which is how you see whether a ChatGPT mention turned into a trial signup. Content Agents plan, write, and publish missing comparison pages to Webflow or Framer with a review inbox. WordPress is listed as coming soon. Ads Radar (sponsored placements inside answers) sits on Professional and the agency plans, not Essential. Rated 4.7/5 on G2, 1,840+ brands and agencies. Customers include Typeform, Duolingo, Yelp, Rabobank, Monks, and WPP.

2. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ tracks eight engines on day one and turns findings into assignable tasks in an Action Center. From $295 a month. GA4, Shopify, and Webflow revenue attribution is listed. Starter is single-country. Credit billing is the listed complaint: G2 reviewers report burning a month's credits in the first week. No published crawler-log product, and citation analytics at page, Reddit, and YouTube depth are not documented on this listing. Useful if the internal problem is a task queue. Not the default ChatGPT mention log.

3. Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI serves AI-optimized versions of pages to LLM crawlers without changing the public site, from $250 a month billed annually. That Agent Experience Platform is a serving lever. Monitoring refreshes weekly. Reporting is the known weak point: reviewers export to Excel to build charts. Sitecore acquired it in June 2026. Pair it with a monitor if you buy it at all.

Profound sits below these dedicated AI-search platforms. Starter is $99 a month billed yearly and ChatGPT-only. Growth is $399 yearly for three engines. The product people mean is Enterprise, around $40k a year, sold as generic marketing agents (content, demand, PR) more than as a dedicated tracker. A SaaS team shopping for ChatGPT mention and citation measurement does not start there.

Ahrefs Brand Radar is from $199 a month on top of an Ahrefs plan. An independent January 2026 test reported 3 ChatGPT mentions where manual checks found 123. Treat it as directional research inside Ahrefs, not as the ChatGPT log.

What the number still will not tell you

A mention is not a trial. Most ChatGPT answers send no click. Visitor analytics give you the floor of AI-referred signups when a click happens. They do not invent a "hidden influence" figure for names that never left the chat. If a vendor quotes a pipeline lift from "ChatGPT SEO" with no stored prompt log, you bought content, not measurement.

If citation analytics show a Reddit thread or a YouTube roundup winning the footnote, that is offsite work. If a competitor's /alternatives page won, that is the brief for Content Agents. If Agent Analytics shows no ChatGPTBot hit on your comparison URL, fix crawl before you write another "what is [category]" post.

How to choose

Single product, one country: Explore, then Essential. You will get mentions, citations, and visitor events. You will not get Ads Radar or the listed crawler-log allowance. Two products or two regions, or you need crawl-to-citation: Professional. Many brands or client reporting: Kick-off.

Load the alternatives and vs prompts first. Category "best software" prompts are noisier. Branded prompts tell you whether the model can describe you at all.

FAQ

Does a mention without a URL still count?

Yes. Record it. Sales already hears "ChatGPT told me about you" with no click in analytics. Keep mention and citation in separate columns.

Will ranking for "[category] software" on Google make ChatGPT cite us?

No. Different retrieval. ChatGPT may cite a G2 list, a Reddit thread, or a competitor comparison page instead. That is why the tracker exists.

Can we skip visitor analytics?

You can. You will then argue from mentions alone. If trial signup is the KPI, put the script or GTM template on the app domain and the marketing site.
