Which social platforms do AI search engines cite? October 2026 ranking
Promptwatch's October 2026 data ranks seven social platforms by share of AI citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews; here is how to read the ranking and what to do with it.
YouTube is the most cited social platform across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, at an average 1.70% of all citations. Reddit follows at 1.03%, then LinkedIn at 0.90%, Facebook at 0.81%, Instagram at 0.56%, TikTok at 0.07% and X at 0.04%. That is the ranking in Promptwatch's social media citations report, published October 6, 2026, for the window September 28 to October 4, 2026.
The average hides more than it shows. The three engines behave so differently that a "social strategy for AI search" only makes sense once you split it by engine. This post walks through the split, what it does not prove, and the order we would work in.
The ranking, engine by engine
ChatGPT barely cites social at all in this window. All seven platforms together make up 0.46% of its citations, down from 5.8% in the report's earlier edition. Reddit fell from 5.19% to 0.09% after the August collapse we covered in our Reddit post. LinkedIn is now ChatGPT's most cited social platform, at 0.3%.
Google AI Overviews is the opposite case. Social platforms account for 12.2% of its citations, about 26 times ChatGPT's share. YouTube leads at 4.28%. Facebook sits at 2.38%, more than doubled and now ahead of Reddit at 2.15%. Instagram holds 1.61% and LinkedIn 1.55%. TikTok shows up only here, at 0.22%.
Perplexity sends 2.7% of its citations to social. LinkedIn and Reddit tie at 0.86%, and YouTube sits at 0.79%, down from 2.67% in the earlier report.
X barely registers anywhere. Its best result is 0.1%, on Perplexity.
What the ranking does not tell you
It is one week of data from one vendor, drawn from prompts Promptwatch monitors in real user interfaces. Three cautions follow.
First, these are shares of citations, not of traffic or of answers. A platform with a 0.9% share is cited far less often than it would look from the percentage alone, and nothing here says how many people clicked.
Second, the swings in the report are large. A platform that fell from 2.67% to 0.79% in one engine, or from 5.19% to 0.09%, shows that these figures can move quickly when an engine changes how it retrieves sources. A ranking taken in October may not hold in December.
Third, correlation is all this offers. The report shows where citations landed. It does not show that publishing on a platform causes a citation, and it does not say your category looks like the pooled average. It also should not be assumed to apply to other markets or languages.
What the report suggests you do
The report's own advice is short, and we are passing it on as the report's suggestion, not ours:
- If your buyers use Google, put YouTube first, and keep public Facebook pages and Instagram profiles complete.
- Do not rely on Reddit threads for ChatGPT visibility.
- For Perplexity, treat LinkedIn as seriously as Reddit.
- Keep X out of AI search plans.
Here is how we would turn that into a working order, using nothing but a browser and a spreadsheet.
- Pick the engine your buyers actually use. The three engines have almost nothing in common on social, so a single shared plan is wasted effort.
- Audit what exists. List your YouTube channel, LinkedIn company page, Facebook page and Instagram profile. Note which are public, current and consistent about what you sell.
- Run 20 to 30 of your category prompts in each engine and write down every social URL cited. This is a small sample, and answers change between runs, but it tells you whether your own category looks anything like the pooled data.
- Fix the gaps in order of engine fit. For Google AI Overviews, that means video descriptions and complete page profiles first. For Perplexity, it means LinkedIn activity from named people and the company page.
- Re-check monthly. Given how fast these shares moved, a quarterly look is too slow.
How the platforms rank as a measurement problem
Here is the part that matters for a tools directory. Measuring social citations is harder than measuring web citations, because the question is not "was my brand named" but "which of my channels were cited, on which prompts, by which engine".
When we compare tools for this, we ask four things: does it separate Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and Instagram, can it filter to your own accounts, can it split by engine, and can it show history so you see a collapse like the one in this report. Our shortlist for tracking social citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity applies those four tests, and Promptwatch is where we would start.
The Promptwatch step: Social media views and My channels
Promptwatch has social citation views for Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and Instagram, found under Sources and then Social media. The useful part for a brand is the "My channels" filter, which narrows the view to your own accounts so you can see whether your channel, rather than a stranger's, is the one being cited. LinkedIn citations are broken out to posts and authors, and top cited LinkedIn posts show on the main dashboard, which makes the Perplexity and ChatGPT advice above directly checkable.
You can filter by prompt, topic and tag, and monitors run your prompt panel daily per model, so once a monitor is live you build the history that would show a drop like Reddit's on your own prompts. Instagram reporting was added on October 28, 2026, and the fact sheet we work from does not name a plan for it, so check the pricing page before you budget for that one. Brand plans start at Essential, $95 a month with a 7-day trial on monthly billing, and the free Explore plan covers ChatGPT only.
If you want to decide which channel earns your first month of effort, our post on Reddit, YouTube or LinkedIn: which citation channel to work first lays out a decision order, and the earlier social citations by AI model snapshot shows how much the numbers have moved since August.
The takeaway
The October ranking is YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, then X, but that order belongs to the average, and the average describes no engine in particular. ChatGPT is nearly social-free right now, Google AI Overviews leans on social heavily, and Perplexity sits in between with LinkedIn and Reddit level. Choose your engine first, then your platform, then check your own channels against what is actually being cited.
