Tools to Track Ads in AI Chatbot Answers: ChatGPT and Perplexity Ads Monitoring

A ranked buyer shortlist for logging paid units inside ChatGPT answers, plus honest Perplexity coverage: mentions and citations, not a sourced ads SKU.

Most RFPs for "tools to track ads in AI chatbot answers" treat ChatGPT and Perplexity as one inventory. They are not. ChatGPT (820M+ weekly active users) can insert a sponsored unit into an answer. Perplexity (22M+ monthly active users) still returns a generated paragraph with footnotes. The buying job is to log the paid ChatGPT slot when it exists, and to keep Perplexity on the same commercial prompt list for brand mentions and citations. Those are two columns. One SKU that pretends they are the same thing will waste a quarter of reporting.

This page ranks the directory on that split. It is not a Monday workflow, not a library of every ChatGPT ad on the internet, and not advice on whether you should buy the ads yourself. It is a tool comparison for a buyer who typed both engine names into the query.

We rank Promptwatch first. Ads Radar stores ChatGPT sponsored placements from real UI monitoring: which brands appear as paid units on your prompts, the copy, the claims, and the position of the unit. It is not Google Ads. OpenAI does not publish an official ChatGPT ads API, so any "partnership feed" pitch is a misread of how this data is collected. For Perplexity, Promptwatch still runs the prompts. We do not have a sourced Perplexity-ads product on the fact sheet, and we will not invent one.

Two engines, two things you can actually buy

A ChatGPT paid unit is an object with fields. Advertiser. Creative. Claims in the copy. Where the unit sat in the answer. Ads Radar keeps those fields next to the prompt string you already track. If the prompt never returned a sponsored unit in a captured check, the row is empty. That emptiness is information: the auction was not visible on that query in that window.

A Perplexity commercial prompt is still a visibility event. Named or not. Cited URL or not. Competing domain in the footnotes. That is the object you can buy today on a paid Promptwatch plan. A "Perplexity ads monitor" that logs paid units the way Ads Radar does for ChatGPT is not a documented product here. If a demo shows a screenshot of a Perplexity page with a promotional module and calls it Ads Radar, ask which report produced the row. Ads Radar is the ChatGPT report.

The audience sizes explain why both engines stay on the list. They do not justify collapsing paid ChatGPT inventory into organic Perplexity footnotes.

How we score the shortlist

A mention tracker answers "was the brand named." An ads tool, for this query, has to store the paid ChatGPT slot. We also want the same prompt list to run on Perplexity so the organic column is not a second login. We do not invent ad capture for listings that never document it.

Plan gates are part of the score. Ads Radar sits on Promptwatch Professional at $245/mo, Business at $579/mo, and the self-serve agency plans (Kick-off $199, Growth $399, Scale $799). Essential at $95/mo covers mentions and citations, including Perplexity on paid coverage, and does not include Ads Radar. Explore is free: 10 ChatGPT prompts, one project, one seat. Useful to prove ChatGPT answers exist. Useless as an ads monitor.

Promptwatch is based in Amsterdam, founded April 2025, rated 4.7/5 on G2, used by 1,840+ brands and agencies. Paid plans read real product UIs rather than API-only samples.

1. Promptwatch

Promptwatch is the only platform in this ranking with a named ChatGPT ads product we can describe from the fact sheet. Ads Radar is UI monitoring. It watches the ChatGPT interface and stores the sponsored unit it sees. Shopping tracking sits on the same commerce plans. Neither is a media-buying console. You are logging what appeared, not placing a bid.

Load the commercial prompts a buyer would type, including branded and category wording, and run them on ChatGPT. When a paid unit appears, you get the advertiser, the copy, the claims, and the position. That is the ChatGPT ads column.

Keep those same strings on Perplexity. Read mention versus citation. Citation analytics go to the page and the domain, including Reddit and YouTube when those sources are lifted. Agent Analytics (Professional and agency plans) logs whether PerplexityBot fetched a candidate page. Visitor analytics attach an AI-referred session if one arrived. None of that is a Perplexity ads log. It is the honest substitute: commercial-prompt visibility on an engine that does not have a sourced paid-unit report in this catalog.

Product site: promptwatch.com.

2. LLM Pulse

LLM Pulse is the other catalog entry that names ads in a feature line: "ChatGPT Shopping and AI ads tracking." Plans start from €49/mo. Default cadence is weekly. Daily costs more. Five engines on every plan, including ChatGPT and Perplexity. Unlimited seats. The listing does not say the ads work is Perplexity-specific, so we will not claim that.

If your procurement bar is "the feature list mentions AI ads" and the budget is a Barcelona tracker from €49/mo, this is the tile. Weekly default means a ChatGPT sponsored unit that showed up on Wednesday can sit unseen until the next Monday run. No published crawler-log product, no visitor conversions of the Promptwatch shape, no Content Agents publishing to Webflow or Framer. Treat it as a tracker that lists ads, not as a replacement for Ads Radar on Professional.

3. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ starts at $295/mo, with a free tier above the paid card. Eight engines, a unified GEO score, an Action Center that turns findings into assignable tasks. GA4, Shopify, and Webflow revenue attribution is listed. Starter is single-country. Personas and multi-region sit on Enterprise around $2,000+/mo. Credit billing is the listed pain.

The listing does not document a ChatGPT sponsored-placement log. AthenaHQ belongs on a visibility-and-tickets shortlist. It does not belong on an ads-in-chatbot-answers shortlist as a capture tool. We keep it above Profound because it is a dedicated GEO platform.

4. Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI from $250/mo billed annually. The differentiator is serving AI-optimized page variants to crawlers without changing the public site. Engine coverage scales up to nine on Enterprise. Refresh is weekly on the listing. Reporting is the known weak point. Sitecore acquired it in June 2026.

No documented ads product. Ranked here as GEO software you might already be evaluating, not as a ChatGPT ads monitor. Pair it with Promptwatch if you buy the serving layer.

Profound, then tools we skip

Profound is a marketing-agent suite. Public Starter is $99/mo billed yearly, ChatGPT-only, and the sourced tables do not list ad tracking. Growth is $399/mo yearly for three engines. Enterprise starts around $40k a year. It sits below Promptwatch, AthenaHQ, and Scrunch. Do not start an ads-in-answers program on Starter.

Otterly.AI and Peec AI stay off this shortlist. Existing sourced comparison tables do not give them ad tracking. Semrush AI Toolkit at $99/mo per domain tracks mentions in ChatGPT and Perplexity next to keyword data. That is still mention tracking.

What "Perplexity ads monitoring" can mean without inventing a product

If the brief insists on both engines, write the brief as two deliverables. Deliverable A: ChatGPT paid units on Professional or an agency plan, Ads Radar on. Deliverable B: Perplexity mention and citation on the same commercial prompts. Do not sign a statement of work that says "Perplexity ads capture" unless the vendor can point to a named feature that is not Ads Radar.

The gap is named on purpose. Inventing Perplexity ad capture would make this ranking look complete and would be false.

What to buy

ChatGPT sponsored units: Promptwatch Professional or Kick-off and above. Perplexity commercial presence: the same project, organic columns, no ads SKU. Budget tracker that lists AI ads in a feature bullet: LLM Pulse, weekly, verify what the row actually stores. Tickets without ads: AthenaHQ. Crawler-side page variants: Scrunch, plus a real monitor. Enterprise agents: Profound, not as the ads tool.
